RATIO FORMATIONIS – LIVING ACCORDING TO THE FORM OF THE HOLY GOSPEL
As Christ, the Incarnate Word of the Father, becomes present in the human persons we encounter in our lives, so it is up to us to embody in our everyday lives the values that we share and that characterize our charism as lesser brothers.
We must be attentive to finding different expressions for these common values in response to the diverse situations and cultures in which we find ourselves. Our challenge is to be faithful witnesses of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in different cultural contexts. (Prot. No. 01066/19, no2)
Br. Roberto Genuin
General Minister of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin
We are sending you the Draft of chapter 1 of the Ratio, which you can use for a day of recollection in this Advent season which has just begun, or during Christmastide. You will find more detailed instructions in the introduction.
What is the purpose of reading and reflecting on this chapter? First of all, it is so that each brother may compare his own experiences and images of Saint Francis with those that appear in the proposed text. Secondly, to be able to share as a fraternity not just our impressions of the text, but also the impact and importance of the charismatic figure of Saint Francis in our own lives. Finally, the aim is to see if, in the opinion of the fraternity, some dimension of the figure of Saint Francis is not reflected with sufficient emphasis or clarity, or if some important aspects are either missing or over-emphasised in the text. Please feel free to make whatever comments you feel are appropriate.
We are sending you the text of the II chapter of the Ratio formationis and inviting formators in a special way to work together with the brothers in formation in writing up a record of their meetings. We ask the Brother Provincial Ministers and Custodes to publish the text to all the friars of their circumscriptions.
What’s in the second chapter?
The five fundamental dimensions that must be present in a ratio formationis:
What are we asking you to do?
– To read the text attentively
The prepared results of these meetings mentioned above are to be sent to the International Formation Councilor of your Conference. Each and every contribution will be valued highly.
The moment has now come to focus on the work of completing a comprehensive draft of chapter III of the Ratio, which aims to present the stages of formation in the light of the key concept of initiation.
It is the responsibility of the Major Superiors, not only of the formators, to continue to motivate and accompany their brothers, and to make sure that this process of reflection is participative and fraternal. What we are asking from you is this: check to see whether the five dimensions of formation which we studied in chapter II can be found in all the formation stages, as a true process of initiation. This is a task for all the brothers and for each fraternity, but in particular for the formators and all the brothers who are in initial formation.
